Friday/Saturday
- Went to Pinnacle Visitor Center with Camie and kids. Had a great time hiking the trails. Gorgeous weather.
- Pumpkin walked Cocoa around on a leash the entire time. She loves that dog so much.
- Ellie--Mom has a big container full of all the Madame Alexander dolls from our childhood. Pumpkin really enjoys playing with them. Yesterday, she helped me photograph them one at a time. Wonderful memories of sweet Momma Frances.
- One of the library books that the children and I have been enjoying this week: Follow the Line by Laura Ljungkvist
- Another library book that I've been enjoying this week: Chicken Tractor by Lee and Foreman. I find this sort of book very helpful as I maintain my imaginary hobby farm.
- For Christmas 2009, my daddy had a strong theme that tied together all of the presents he received. He definitely had a "Tim Keller Christmas." He had been on a Tim Keller kick over the fall, so we all seemed to have the same idea when it came to selecting a Christmas gift for him. He received books, more sermons, and even an ipod nano from my mom so that he could listen to the sermons more conveniently. I remember Mom saying, back in December, that all Dad lacked was a Tim Keller lunchbox & Tim Keller footie pajamas.
- The other day, he handed me the ipod nano with a particular sermon that he wanted me to listen to. So I listened to it. Loved it. Heartily recommend it to you: Disciplines of Guidance, Tim Keller sermon 2/9/97. I think I'm going to buy it for myself. Well worth $2.50.
- The kids were with me in the car as I was listening to the sermon. (We have a way to hook our ipod up to the car speakers--and that, my friends, is the most prized piece of technology in the mini-van...the ability to listen to whatever music or podcast I want to listen to as I drive via our ipod cord.) So now, the kids and I really want to read the book The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald. (...a book that is said to be one of JRR Tolkien's childhood favorites. I'm officially intrigued.)
- I like Katie Bowser's music. We bought her CD after we heard her live. Today, one of her songs happened to pop up on my playlist...It's called "I Like to Be Where You Are." I listened to the song & thought of my sweet husband, who is back in our hometown. Missing him! As the song says, "Far from you is my least favorite place...."
- Went along with Papa to take Moses (Gram & Papa's basenji) to the "dog section" of Burns Park. Oh, how fun! We got to watch Moses play with a Golden and a Rhodesian Ridgeback. (The RR was named Copper, and he of course prompted lots of memories of Lazarus! {my grandmother used to have a RR named Lazarus.})
- My favorite part of the dog socialization process is when the galloping starts. Moses and the Golden Retriever met each other for the first time (lots of sniffing involved), and then--before we knew it--they were absolutely galloping from one end of the fence to the other. Full speed. So happy. Weaving in and out of each other's path (without any prior rehearsal, it must be noted.) Joie de vivre.
- I'm seeing lots of wisteria. I love seeing it draping over a trellis or pergola. On the other hand, when I see wisteria engulfing a big huge tree, I worry for the tree. Are people consciously letting the wisteria grow on the tree? Won't it eventually strangle the tree? Novice gardeners like me would like to know.
- I was able to tag along with Mom to Bernice's bridal shower. So great to see her! She was glowing! Loved hearing about her hubby-to-be, Kevin.
- We drove by Planet Smoothie & the kids asked if we could get a smoothie. Normally I would say no to this request--after all, $3.99 doesn't grow on trees. However. It is vacation, so I shocked them by saying, "sure!" While we were ordering, I struck up a conversation with the smoothie man & happened to mention that we've never been to Planet Smoothie in our entire lives. And do you know what he did? He made me a free strawberry+peach smoothie, just for being a first time customer. So nice! (And now it's my turn to do a random act of kindness. Pay it forward, right?)
- Saturday night--Gpoppa took the kids and I to War Memorial park. Superboy got involved in a fun game of tag with other boys. Pumpkin's favorite part was the tire swing. Happy times.
I'm signing off for the week.
Have a great rest of the weekend.
