Wednesday/Thursday
- Uncle Joe was able to leave his school for an off-campus lunch. Mom, the kids, and I met him up at The Purple Cow for a lunch date. Bleu cheese burger...yum
- Mom & Dad got the most charming piece of snail mail today that she shared with me. It was a thank you note from Captain Steve for the hand-me-down boat. (My parents gave him a boat that needed to be "lovingly restored"...that sort of thing is right up Captain Steve's alley, apparently.) In the note, Captain Steve explained that his grandfather owned a boat by the name of "Dumb Head." Therefore, as a beautiful way of carrying on the legacy, Capt Steve has named this hand-me-down boat "Dumb Head" as well. The note was really quite touching. (Sarah Barry, your hubby has quite the writing knack.) I just visited Sarah Barry's blog & noticed that "Dumb Head" even made it into a blog post.
- The last line from the thank you note really made us smile: "My good friend Paul and I are taking the boat for a ride Sunday afternoon and we are planning a multi-boat trip from Montgomery to the beach via the Alabama River later this year. It's only 370 miles and I think it is just what "Dumb Head" needs."
- As someone who has water-skiied behind "Dumb Head," (which is a rather sloooow experience), and as someone who has noticed the strained effort she had in pulling any skier over the age of 12, I hope that she rises to the occasion and gives Captain Steve and his friends a wonderful river-to-ocean experience. (Thank goodness for Captain Steve's restoration plans...) I'm sure that boat will have a great time seeing the ocean for the first time....
- My mom and I enjoyed skimming through this photo series about what people eat: What the World Eats. This is an interesting photo series to click through for anyone who, like me, is enjoying Jamie's Food Revolution. (one comment about one of the photos: the people from Mexico sure do drink a lot of Coke.)
- Superboy played with Robert & Joe's old GI Joe toy collection.
- Pumpkin played dress-up with Gingi's pashmina collection.
- Movie date: Me, Gingi, the kids, Robert, & Allison. We went to see How to Train a Dragon. LOVED it. I want to ride a Night Fury like Hiccup did. Loved the flying segments. Also, the animation (or whatever you call it at this stage in the evolution of CG) is absolutely incredible.
- Good previews, too. There's going to be a new Karate Kid movie! Starring Will Smith's son! Breaking news--you heard it here first. (Seriously, it did look like a good movie.)
- Another random movie comment: I haven't seen the new Alice & Wonderland, and don't know if I even want to, but I have noticed in the movie hype that Anne Hathaway's character is beautiful. I love her look. (Her character is the White Queen--photo can be seen here on wiki.)
- Medical lecture date: Me, Gingi, and Allison. We went along to listen as my dad presented grand rounds. Loved it. In fact, of all the presentations I've ever heard about Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis, this presentation was the best.
- Seriously, though--I loved getting to be there. I was so happy to get to hear more about my friends the perforins. (...my new favorite topic in the realm of immune system function. They are in your body! right now! working away! Be amazed. Be very amazed.)
- I got to see my cousin Mary and her precious little baby boy. (9 months old) His smile warms my heart! It is the cutest thing! He has such a happy little personality.
- It's fun to be back in the house I grew up in. I was preparing Pumpkin's bath last night & smiled at the fact that the hot/cold is backwards on the bath faucet. (Ellie, remember that little detail?) I really enjoy this home & love that my children get to spend time here. (Relaxing days like we're having this week are esp nice.)
- I am *mostly* caught up on emails. Such a great feeling! I get a lot of emails on a weekly basis & I don't have a great system for keeping up with them. I often get behind and feel overwhelmed with writing people back. I think that one of my problems is my verbosity. You have to give short answers on email reponses. Hunter does a much better job at this, and therefore usually stays more caught up with his inbox. Note to self: Must compose short reponses. Ok. Will do. (If you get an email response from me that sounds like a telegraph message, now you know why. Full stop.)
